Station Grand Isle Information

U. S. Coast Guard Station Grand Isle is located in Grand Isle, Louisiana at the end of LA HWY 1. Grand Isle is the only inhabited barrier island in Louisiana and just a 2.5 hour drive from New Orleans.

Station Grand Isle is one of the three priority "3" CONUS small boat stations in the Coast Guard. It is a true multi-mission station with a considerable workload. The remote location poses unique challenges to arriving members. We are 45 minutes from any services, retail stores, and restaurants. The town has one supermarket, two gas stations, two marinas, three restaurants, and a few shops. There are no daycare facilities on the island. The closest fast food restaurants and Walmart are located "up the bayou" in Galliano, a 45 minute drive. The town of Houma has all the retail stores, restaurants, and services you would expect to find in a small city. Houma is 90 minutes from the base.

Station Morale & Recreation

Fishing is a big part of recreation. During the summer there are many fishing tournaments. The largest is the Grand Isle International Tarpon Rodeo which is an annual tradition that has been around for many years. Each year people from all over the United States come to this small island to enjoy some of the best fishing the world has to offer. It is estimated by town officials that Grand Isle's population grows from 1,300 to an amazing 12,000 people who arrive in cars, trucks, and mobile homes, each towing their fishing boats.

The station has a swimming pool that is open year round, a big playground for the kids to enjoy, a fire pit and gazebo, inflatable paintball field, a weight room (nicknamed the "Mosquito Pit") and a cardio fitness room located in the UPH building.

Physical fitness is also a big part of the crew's daily lives. The unit has a weekly fitness routine consisting of individual runs, group runs, and sports days. The beach at Grand Isle State Park makes for a very enjoyable run. During sports days, the crew competes in various team sports such as football, soccer, basketball, softball, or Ultimate Frisbee.
