Sector Lower Mississippi River is located across from Mud Island on the Wolf River Chute just a short way up from Mile Marker 736 on the Mississippi River in Memphis Tennessee.
Sector Lower Mississippi River was created from the merging of Group Lower Mississippi River and Marine Safety Office Memphis. Commissioned on 1 July 2005, Sector Lower Mississippi River is charged with implementing the Coast Guards missions on over 2200 miles of the Mississippi , Red, Arkansas, Black, Ouachita, White, Yazoo and Lower Old Rivers.
Sector Lower Mississippi's primary missions are Aids to Navigation; Ports, Waterways, and Coastal Security; Marine Environmental Pollution Response, and Marine Safety.
In order to perform those missions, Sector Lower Mississippi River is staffed with over 400 active duty, reserve, civilian and auxiliary personnel. These hard working and dedicated members monitor nearly a dozen radio towers, operate six Inland River Buoy Tenders, an Aids to Navigation Team, a Long Range Aids to Navigation Station. In addition, they guard and maintain 9 shore facilities worth over $142 million.
