Unit Overview and History

Marine Safety Unit Lake Charles is the sole Louisiana member of the Sector Houston-Galveston zone. A subordinate unit of MSU Port Arthur, Texas, MSU Lake Charles became an independent command in 2001.

In 2005, the Marine Safety Unit relocated from its previous site in the Port of Lake Charles to accommodate a steadily growing crew complement, and moved to the current location in downtown Lake Charles. The unit's 75 active duty and five reservists are comprised of a combination of enlisted members and officers. They carry out all maritime safety, security and law enforcement activities in the unit's 8,000 square mile area, inland of the Gulf of Mexico shoreline.

Community involvement is highly emphasized at the MSU. Being one of only two Coast Guard units in the area, MSU members serve as the de-facto recruiters for Southwest Louisiana. Unit members participate in local parades, tutor at local elementary schools, coach in local sports leagues and work closely with community officials each day.

Lake Charles is located approximately 25 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico along the Calcasieu River with nearly 200,000 people calling the area home. Despite being the fifth largest city in Louisiana, Lake Charles still exhibits a small-town atmosphere.  It is the major cultural and educational center in the southwest region of the state. The city serves as the seat of Calcasieu Parish and is the principal city of the Lake Charles Metropolitan Area, which includes the parishes of Calcasieu and Cameron.  The city is considered a major petrochemical refining center, gaming center, and home to several schools and universities. With over 75 festivals held annually, Lake Charles is referred to as the Festival Capital of Louisiana.  Members and their families avail themselves to a host of local activities including concerts in the park or Civic Center, stress-free shopping, diverse dining or one of the many festivals. Often referred to as a sportsman's paradise, the surrounding area is flush with outdoor activities from many sports leagues and events to copious fishing and hunting opportunities.

Located conveniently between the metropolises of New Orleans, LA and Houston, TX  and approximately one hour from Beaumont, TX, residents of Lake Charles are sure to find their niche either within Lake Charles or within a reasonable drive. Affordable housing is available for purchase or rent within a short commute from Marine Safety Unit Lake Charles.  Information about the southwest Louisiana utility providers, employment opportunities, cost of living, as well as local businesses can be found on the Southwest Louisiana Chamber of Commerce website.
