History
In 1942, the U. S. Coast Guard absorbed the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation and the Marine Inspection Office in Galveston was established. On October 1, 1976, Marine Inspection Office Galveston combined with Coast Guard Group Galveston’s Port Safety Division to form Marine Safety Office Galveston. Collectively, these two Coast Guard offices were located in the Galveston Post Office Building.
On August 31, 1995, one Captain of the Port Zone was established in the Galveston Bay region when Marine Safety Office Galveston consolidated operations with Marine Safety Office Houston. This merger resulted in the commissioning of Marine Safety Unit (MSU) Galveston, the first unit of its type in the Coast Guard. On June 1, 2001, the unit relocated to the Army Corps of Engineers building.
On December 15, 2005, Marine Safety Office Houston, Group Galveston, and Vessel Traffic Service Houston combined and became Sector Houston-Galveston. On October 22, 2007, Marine Safety Unit Galveston moved to its present location in Texas City. Accordingly, on December 13, 2010, MSU Galveston was renamed Marine Safety Unit Texas City.
Marine Safety Unit Texas City is comprised of 74 active duty, 37 reserve, and 7 civilian crew members who perform numerous missions, including commercial vessel inspections, marine casualty investigations, waterway management, maritime law enforcement, commercial fishing vessel safety and marine environmental response.
Since 1984, Marine Safety Unit Texas City has received 14 awards and commendations - most recently a Meritorious Unit Commendation for managing multiple high-profile response operations offshore from February 2009 to October 2009.
