Marine Safety Unit (MSU) Texas City is comprised of 74 active duty, 37 reserve and 7 civilian crew members who perform numerous missions, including commercial vessel inspections, port state control examinations, facility safety and security, marine casualty investigations, waterways management, maritime law enforcement, commercial fishing vessel safety, and all multi-mission response operations.
MSU Texas City's Area of Responsibility encompasses the Ports of Galveston, Freeport and Texas City; over 120 miles of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway; 26 miles of the Houston Ship Channel; and the entrance to the nation’s largest petrochemical port complex. MSU Texas City also oversees over 14,000 square-miles of the Outer Continental Shelf, including several offshore Lightering Zones and the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary.
