Aids to navigation Team New Orleans' (ANT NOLA) primary mission is maintaining aids to Navigation (ATON). The aids that ANT Nola maintains are located along the Mississippi River, various lakes, bayous and canals and rivers. This area includes Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas, Lake Borgne, and all connecting channels. Intercoastal Waterway (ICW) from English Lookout to Dupree cut/Barataria Waterway. Mississippi River Favret LT 52 to Mississippi River Gartness LT 228. Mississippi River Gulf Outlet(MRGO) LT 65 to LT 130.
During the summer months ANT NOLA is heavily involved in "brushing" along the Mississippi river in order to maintain a line of sight between the aids on the river bank and the ships transiting the Mississippi River.
This includes cutting down trees up to 18" in diameter. Unit personnel are extensively trained in proper safe tree felling procedures.
ANT New Orleans is a very well equiped unit that has the capability to construct 4 pile towers on land with a focal plane height of up to 25 feet.
Secondary missions of ANT New Orleans are Search and Rescue (SAR), various Homeland Security details, and providing logistical support for all other Federal, State, and local agencies and Coast Guard units.
ANT New Orleans is also capable of shallow water operations using the unit's Skiff.
This is vital for operation in the flood plain of the Mississippi River.
