Captain Jim Pruett is currently assigned to Sector Miami as the Deputy Sector Commander. Prior to this assignment, CAPT Pruett served 9 years as a Judge Advocate and law specialist. His assignments included the Coast Guard Academy as the Staff Judge Advocate/Chief Counsel to the Superintendent from July 2009 through 2010, the Deputy Staff Judge Advocate and Principal Assistant Legal Officer for the Seventh Coast Guard District from 2006 to 2009, and staff legal officer Pacific Area/Maintenance and Logistic Command Pacific from 2003 through 2006.
Prior to CAPT Pruett’s career as a Judge Advocate, he served in the marine safety field, including tours at 1) Marine Safety Office/Group Portland, Oregon from 1997 through 2000 as a Senior Marine Inspector, Chief, Port State Control/Foreign Vessel Branch, and Chief, Planning and Contingency Department; 2) Supervisor, Marine Safety Detachment, Territory of American Samoa from 1995 to 1997; and 3) Marine Safety Office, Puget Sound, Seattle Washington from 1993-1995 as a marine inspector apprentice.
CAPT Pruett is a native of Pacifica, California and received his commission in 1991 at Coast Guard Officer Candidate School in Yorktown Virginia. He earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Golden Gate University, School of Law in San Francisco and is a member in good standing with the Bar for both the State of California and the Supreme Court of the United States. CAPT Pruett holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Chico.
CAPT Pruett’s military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (3), the Coast Guard Commendation Medal (3), the Coast Guard Achievement Medal (2), the Commandant’s Letter of Commendation, Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
