Master Chief Mello was recruited in New Bedford, MA, and completed basic training at CG Training Center Cape May, NJ in 1983. Following
"boot camp", he reported to USCGC CONFIDENCE homeported in Kodiak, Alaska. Future assignments included: USCG Light Station New Dungeness in Sequim, Washington; USCGC POINT COUNTESS homeported in Port Angeles, Washington; USCG Station Panama City, Florida; USCGC CHINCOTEAGUE homeported in Mobile, Alabama; USCGC KISKA homeported in Hilo, Hawaii; USCGC POINT BENNET homeported in Port Townsend, Washington; USCG Station Fort Lauderdale, Florida; USCG Station Fort Pierce, Florida; USCG Station Cape Cod Canal; Officer In Charge of USCGC GANNET
homeported in Dania, Florida; and USCGC BLUEFIN homeported in Ft. Pierce Florida. He's currently assignment
as Command Master Chief at Coast Guard Sector Miami.
He is a graduate of the Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Academy (class #79), and has attended numerous schools and several Leadership and Management classes offered by the Coast Guard.
Master Chief Mello is the recipient of the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, Coast Guard Achievement Medal, DOT Gold Medal for outstanding Achievement, Coast Guard Unit Commendation, Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation, Meritorious Team Commendation Ribbon, Coast Guard Bicentennial Unit Commendation, Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Special Operations Service Medal, Coast Guard Sea Service Ribbon, Riflemen Ribbon, Pistol Ribbon, Officer in Charge Afloat and Ashore Insignia, Coxswain Insignia, Cutterman Insignia, Boat Forces Insignia, and Sector Command Master Chief Insignia.
Master Chief Mello is an avid runner, competing in ten Marathons. Master Chief Mello is also a card carrying member of RED SOX NATION.
