Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Requests

The FOIA allows the public to obtain copies of most government records, including inspection files, investigative reports, and Regional Examination Center (REC) files. The FOIA requires a response be provided to the requestor within 20 days.

The Freedom of Information Act requests MUST be in writing using electronic or regular mail, or electronic facsimile. (1) The envelope in which the request is sent should be prominently marked "FOIA". (2) Use of Coast Guard e-mail, stationery, and/or postage to SUBMIT a FOIA request is NOT authorized. (3) The request should be addressed to the office at which the records are located. (4) The request MUST reasonably describe the information that is sought. It is important that the requestor provides an accurate description of the records desired in order to satisfy the request while keeping down costs for both the requestor and the agency.
