About the Deputy Commander

Captain Gregory J. Depinet, USCG

Deputy CommanderCaptain Gregory Depinet assumed the duties as the U.S. Coast Guard, Deputy Commander for Sector Miami in July 2010. In this capacity, he serves as the senior advisor and Alternate Captain of the Port overseeing five deep water ports, four Search and Rescue Stations, and eight Cutters. Sector Miami spans 200 miles of Southeast Florida Coastline and includes over 250,000 square miles of ocean, including the waters adjacent to, and surrounding, the Bahamas.

Prior to being assigned to Sector Miami, Captain Depinet was assigned to the Aviation Training Center in Mobile, AL as the Assistant Chief of the Training Division. At ATC, Captain Depinet led the development of CG-wide aviation capabilities and training program for 940 pilots at 26 units.

Upon commissioning, he served on the USCGC ESCAPE home-ported in Charleston, South Carolina as Engineer of the Watch, Damage Control Assistant, In-port and Underway Officer of the Deck. He was selected for Naval Flight Training in 1991 and completed training in December 1992. He was subsequently assigned to the Operations Division at Aviation Training Center, Mobile, Alabama as an HU-25A/C Search and Rescue Pilot, Communication Security Management System Custodian, and attained designation as an HU-25 Aircraft Commander. From 1997 to 2001, he was assigned to Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christ, Texas where he stood duty as an HU-25A/B Search and Rescue Pilot and fulfilled roles as the Communications Officer, Flight Safety Officer, and upgraded to HU-25 Instructor Pilot and Chairperson of the HU-25 Flight Examining Board.

He is a Marine Safety, Security, and Environmental Protection Specialist and has served at Marine Safety Office Corpus Christi, Texas and Marine Safety Office New Orleans, Louisiana. He was Chief of the Planning Department when Sector New Orleans was established and served as the Planning Section Chief during response operations following Hurricane Katrina. Captain Depinet’s aviation ratings include: Airline Transport Pilot, Airplane Multiengine Land; CFI, CFII and MEI ratings with a type rating in the DA-20/Falcon 20 aircraft.

Captain Depinet is a 1989 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. In 2000 he was awarded a Master of Aeronautical Science degree with an Academic Specialization in Management with Highest Honors from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, NAS Corpus Christi, Texas. Captain Depinet’s personal military awards include the Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medal, three Coast Guard Commendation Medals, and five Coast Guard Achievement Medals.
