Command Master ChiefMaster Chief Shumate enlisted in the Coast Guard in April, 1988, after serving four years in the Army Reserve.  His tours afloat include USCGC GENTIAN (WLB-290) homeported in Atlantic Beach, NC and USCGC DEPENDABLE (WMEC-626) homported in Cape May, NJ.  He has also been assigned to Sector Boston, Group Fort Macon, Atlantic Area Staff, and completed three tours of duty at Training Center Cape May.  Master Chief Shumate earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Excelsior College.  His service schools include the Senior Enlisted Joint Professional Military Education Course, Instructor Development, Course Designer, Team Leader and Facilitator, Commandant’s Performance Excellence Criteria, and Emergency Medical Technician Courses, as well as the Chief Petty Officer Academy, Class 121, and the Senior Enlisted Command Master Chief Course.  His personal awards include the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, 5 Coast Guard Achievement Medals (with "O" Device), 3 Commandant's Letter of Commendation Ribbons, 7 Good Conduct awards, and the Coast Guard Sea Service Ribbon.  Master Chief Shumate is a silver lifetime member of the Chief Petty Officer's Association.
