Coast Guard Sector Key West, Florida


Captain Janszen assumed the duties as Commander, Coast Guard Sector Key West on June 30, 2015. He serves as the operational commander for Coast Guard missions within a 55,000 square nautical mile region bordering the territorial seas of Cuba and the Bahamas, comprising the Port of Key West, the Southern Straits of Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico. In his capacity, he oversees three multi-mission Coast Guard Stations, six patrol boats, and an Aids to Navigation Team.

Captain Janszen enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1989 and graduated Basic Training as an Honor Graduate. His first tour of duty was at Coast Guard Station Panama City, Florida, where he gained valuable experience as a boat crewman, coxswain, and boarding team member. After completing Aviation Survivalman (ASM) School, he served as a Helicopter Rescue Swimmer at Coast Guard Air Station Savannah, Georgia (1991-1992).

Upon graduation from Officer Candidate School in 1992, he reported to Coast Guard Group Hampton Roads, Virginia, as the Law Enforcement Officer. He then served as an Operational  Intelligence Officer at the Seventh Coast Guard District in 1995, Operations Officer at Coast Guard Group Mobile, Alabama in 1998, and at the Joint Rescue Coordination Center for Search and Rescue at the Fourteenth District in Honolulu, Hawaii in 2001. In 2003 he became the Assistant Branch Chief for Search and Rescue. He served as Commanding Officer of Maritime Safety and Security Team (MSST) New York (2006-2009), completed a     two year assignment (2009-2011) in the Force Readiness Command and then served on the Pacific Area staff as the Response Operations Planning Branch Chief. As the Deputy Sector Commander at Sector San Diego from 2012-2015, he led 465    personnel in conducting a wide variety of Coast Guard missions within an area that extends 200 nautical miles offshore and inland along the Colorado River system.

Captain Janszen earned a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in 2006. His other degrees   include a Bachelor of Science Degree from Florida Southern College and an Associate of Arts Degree from Oxford College of Emory University. Captain Janszen is the proud father of four children and is married to CDR (Ret.)    DesaRae Atnip, a 1994 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

His personal awards include three Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medals, three Coast Guard Commendation Medals, the Coast Guard Achievement Medal, Commandant's Letter of Commendation, and the Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal.
