Captain Aylwyn S. Young
Captain Young is the Executive
Assistant to the Coast Guard Atlantic Area Commander.
He is the Area Commander’s primary advisor, scheduler, and speech
writer, who serves as the operational commander for all U.S. Coast Guard
missions ranging from the Rocky Mountains to the Arabian Gulf and spans
across five Coast Guard Districts and 40 states.
Prior
to his current assignment, he served as Deputy Commander, U.S. Coast Guard
Sector, Saint Petersburg, Florida, where he led, managed, and supervised 16
sub-units protecting the maritime domain for the west coast of Florida.
Captain
Young enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1978.
A 1989 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Officers Candidate School
and a former chief petty officer, he has served over 33 years in a variety
of units. His assignments
include Team Leader, Coast Guard Drug Interdiction Assist Team, Atlantic
Area; First Lieutenant and Law Enforcement Officer aboard USCGC TAMPA,
Portsmouth, Virginia; Chief, Applicant Processing Branch, Headquarters, U.S.
Military Entrance Processing Command, North Chicago, Illinois; Commanding
Officer, Coast Guard Station, St. Clair Shores, Michigan; Administrative
Assignment Officer , Coast Guard Personnel Command, Washington, District of
Columbia; Commander, Coast Guard Group, Ohio Valley, Louisville, Kentucky;
and as Chief, Office of Defense Representative, U.S. Embassy, San Jose,
Coast Rica.
Captain
Young’s enlisted assignments include Chief, Administration Department, Coast
Guard Marine Safety Office, Chicago, Illinois; Administrative Assistant in
USCGC SPENCER, Boston, Massachusetts, Director of Auxiliary Office, Second
Southern Region, Nashville, Tennessee; Coast Guard representative aboard USS
PORTLAND, deploying with the U.S. Navy to Central America, South America,
and West Africa; Administrative Assistant, Coast Guard Marine Safety Office,
Paducah, Kentucky and as crew member aboard USCGC KAW, Cleveland, Ohio.
Captain Young is a graduate of Southern
Illinois University, holding a Bachelor of Science in Workforce Education
and Development. He has also
completed courses in a variety of Homeland Security, Coast Guard, and
Department of Defense mission areas.
Captain
Young’s awards include two Defense Meritorious Service Medals, Meritorious
Service Medal, four Coast Guard Commendation Medals, two Coast Guard
Achievement Medals, and various unit commendations and service medals.
