SECTOR KEY WEST DEPUTY COMMANDER

Commander Gary Tomasulo

Commander Gary Tomasulo assumed the duties
as U.S. Coast Guard, Deputy Commander for Sector Key West in July 2010. In
this capacity he serves as the senior advisor and Alternate Captain of the
Port overseeing three Search and Rescue Stations, nine patrol boat crews an
Aids to Navigation Team. Sector Key West is responsible for all Coast
Guard missions in the port of Key West, southern Straits of Florida, and
Gulf of Mexico. Prior to reporting to Sector Key West, Commander
Tomasulo attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of
Management in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Commander
Tomasulo has served in a variety of surface operations, command and staff
assignments. His surface operations tours include Deck Watch Officer
aboard USCGC Sorrel (WLB-296) homeported in Governors Island, New York;
Executive Officer of USCGC Kiska (WPB-1336), in Hilo, Hawaii; and Commanding
Officer of USCGC Key Largo (WPB-1324) homeported in Tybee Island, Georgia.
His most
recent staff assignment was at the White House as Director for North America
and Director for Brazil and Southern Cone on the National Security Council
staff from 2007 to 2009, where he developed and coordinated U.S. policy
toward Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
Additional assignments ashore include: Legal Advisor to the Coast Guard’s
Office of Law Enforcement in Washington, DC; Deputy, Operations Law Group in
the Coast Guard’s Office of Maritime and International Law; Congressional
Fellow for U.S. Senator Mike DeWine; and Aide and Speech Writer for Admiral
James M. Loy, Commander Atlantic Area, Governors Island, New York and after
the Admiral’s transfer to Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, DC as Aide
to the Chief of Staff, U.S. Coast Guard.
A native
of Shirley, New York, Commander Tomasulo is a 1991 graduate of the U.S.
Coast Guard Academy. His academic degrees include a Bachelor of
Science degree from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, a Juris Doctor degree from
Hofstra University School of Law, and a Master of Business Administration
degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of
Management. Commander Tomasulo is a graduate of the Naval Justice
School and a member of the New York State Bar.
Commander
Tomasulo’s military awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Coast
Guard Commendation Medal (four awards), Coast Guard Achievement Medal (two
awards), Army Achievement Medal, and numerous service awards. In 1998,
Commander Tomasulo was awarded the U.S. Navy League’s Captain David H.
Jarvis Award for inspirational leadership and operational excellence.
Additionally, Commander Tomasulo served as a board member of the Coast Guard
Academy Alumni Association Board of Directors from 2006 to 2010.
Commander Tomasulo is married to the former
Kelli Short and they have two sons.
