GUARDIANS OF THE GULF

rrrKevin M Hales JR was born in Waterbury, CT. He joined the Coast Guard in September 1990 and reported aboard CGC Yocona in Kodiak Alaska in October of the same year. After 15 months he attended MK “A” School. Upon graduation, he was assigned to MLB Station Yaquina Bay located in picturesque Newport Oregon. It was here that he met and married his beautiful wife and they had their first child. After a three year tour, the then MK3 Hales was sent to the USCGC Mellon out of Seattle, WA where he was promoted to E5 and served in the ship’s auxiliary division. Upon completion of that tour he moved cross country to Pensacola, FL to report aboard the Small Boat Station. Within two years MK2 Hales was promoted to E6 and received orders to CGC Hamilton, stationed in the sun-washed city of San Diego where he was again assigned to the auxiliary division. It was during this tour that a second child joined the family. After three years the Hales family pulled up stakes and traveled across the country one more time to carry out orders to report aboard NESU Portsmouth, VA. Assigned to the District Five Buoy Maintenance program for the first two years of the four year tour, MK1 Hales became MKC Hales. In the fall of 2004 Chief Hales moved across the passageway to the Small Boat Port Engineer desk. In 2007, the family pulled up stakes, struck out over the water and became residents of San Juan, PR. Assigned to USCGC Chincoteague as it’s EPO he completed his tour this summer, and reported aboard Station Sand Key.
