Coast Guard Station St. Inigoes

Guardians of the Potomac

Off the beaten path sits a simple complex of buildings overlooking Molls Cove of St. Mary’s River that make up Coast Guard Station St. Inigoes. Situated at the edge of the Webster Field Annex of Naval Air Station Patuxent River, the station is one of five under the control of the Coast Guard Sector Baltimore, which is responsible for all operations in the Potomac River, middle and upper Chesapeake Bay and the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.

Dedicated in 1976 and designated a multi-mission facility, the current 31 active duty and 11 reserved enlisted members of the station toil tirelessly and enthusiastically carrying out their primary duties, including search and rescue (SAR), enforcement of laws and treaties (ELT), marine environmental protection (MEP) and recreational boating safety (RBS).

With 852 boardings last year – the most in the fifth district – Station St. Inigoes upholds its commitment to educating the public on boater safety. And, coupled with the execution of 132 SAR cases in between training for STAN Team, the station is recognized as a leader in its sector. To that end, crew members were recently presented for the second time with the Kimball Award, which honors the “best of the best.” Station St. Inigoes received a score of 49 out of a possible 50.

In addition to its primary responsibilities, the station provides support to NAS Patuxent River and its tenant test and evaluation facilities and presidential security operations, as well as liquid natural gas tanker protection.

With the multitude of area cultural and outdoor activities, the men and women of Station St. Inigoes maintain a very busy schedule. Yet, through their tireless effort in promoting safety, responsibility and lawfulness, they, without a doubt, live up to their motto: “Guardians of the Potomac.”
