
"Service to the Fleet"
The Operations Petty Officer reports to the Executive Officer. The Operations Petty Officer may report directly to the Commanding Officer for operational matters, however the Executive Officer shall be kept fully informed of those matters. The FS2 and SK2 will also report directly to the Executive Officer for their specific administrative responsibilities. The Operations Petty Officer will monitor their work and assist when possible. Additionally, the Operations Petty officer will keep the department informed of schedule changes and general ships business. The FS2 will report directly to the Executive Officer for Food Services matters, including the procurement of provisions, menus preparation, records and reports. For all other matters such as cleanliness of the mess, conduct of meals, procurement of galley supplies, and order on the mess deck, the FS2 will report to the Operations Petty Officer.
Such duties include: The maintenance of the bridge, including the pilothouse, flying bridge, and bridge wings both interior and exterior. The maintenance and operation of all electronic navigation, communication, search and meteorological equipment. All duties associated with communications, including the preparation of operational messages, and the maintenance of frequency plans, publications, and codes. Visual signaling, and the operation and maintenance of associated equipment and materials, including flags and pennants, and semaphore flags. The maintenance and upkeep of all navigational charts and publications. Charts will be maintained and corrected per unit instructions. The maintenance and use of assigned navigational equipment, including sextants, bearing circles, azimuth rings, pelorus, magnetic (fluxgate) compass (ship and boat), plotting equipment and binoculars. The maintenance of all ship’s clocks and chronometers. Training bridge watchstanders. The collection, interpretation, and dissemination of oceanographic and meteorological information and messages. The preparation of and follow-up on all CASREPs for all equipment under the Operations Department responsibility. Those reports should be reviewed by the EPO prior to release by the Commanding Officer.
Maintenance of all deck logs, including the Unit Log, the Navigation Log, Radio Log, and other logs as directed by the Executive Officer. Assisting the Executive Officer with the general administration of the unit as required. Ensuring completion and accuracy of all Navigational briefs and navigational risk assessments.
