USCGC CLEAT
Philadelphia, PA

MISSION
As with any
ship or small boat in the Coast Guard, our most
important mission is Search
and Rescue. The CLEAT stands 'Always Ready' to assist a mariner in need.
However, rescuing distressed mariners is not our only function. The design
mission of this ship is Ice Breaking. This boat is capable of breaking up
to 18 inches of fresh ice. During 2-3 weeks of the average winter, the
maintenance of a navigable channel is dependant on the efforts of the three WYTL's (the CGC CAPSTAN is our sister ship located in Philadelphia and the
CGC CHOCK is home ported in Portsmouth, VA) located within the waters of the
fifth Coast Guard District.
During the summer months and mild periods of the winter, the crew of the CLEAT stays busy, conducting Law Enforcement Operations. All Petty Officers and above in the Coast Guard are empowered by Congress as Federal Law Enforcement Officers. We conduct inspections of ships entering the ports within the Area of Operations and ensure compliance with all applicable federal laws and regulations. We also spend a significant amount of time promoting Recreational Boating Safety by conducting inspections of these vessels and there gear. Finally we work closely with the Captain of the Port, in both Philadelphia and Baltimore engaged in the issues of Marine Environmental Protection.
