The most important resource in the Coast Guard is our people. That is certainly the case here onboard the CLEAT.
It takes a lot of hard work to maintain a ship that is more than thirty years old in the condition that it is in. The ship is still operating with its original engine. In addition, as you look around you will see the pride which three decades of Coast Guard personnel have taken in the ship.
The ship's crew is made up of the following people:
A Chief Boatswain's (pronounced Bosun) Mate is the Officer
in Charge. This person is
ultimately responsible for everything that happens aboard the ship.
A Boatswain's Mate First Class is the Executive Petty Officer
(XPO). In addition to being the second in command, the XPO is responsible
for the finances and administrative functions of the ship.
A Machinery Technician First Class is the Engineering Petty Officer (EPO).
It is that person's responsibility to ensure the
operability of the ship's machinery. This includes the main engine, and the generators
as well as almost thirty other associated systems.
A Machinery Technician Second Class serves as the Assistant EPO, and is the Senior Watch Coordinator, responsible for scheduling duty
when in port.
Two Seamen round out the crew. These are the backbone of the
ship's force. They are responsible for the deck maintenance.
This means that if its clean, or painted, it was probably one of them who
did it. Often a difficult job, the Seamen are largely responsible
for the looks of the ship. When underway, these individuals with the
Machinery Technicians, stand watch steering the ship, acting as lookout
and monitoring the engine performance.
