Reporting Personnel

Each individual member is required to check in with his or her unit as per the member’s orders in Service Dress Bravos. It is recommended that you pack at least one set of ODUs to change into. If you are unable to report on the day of your orders you must call the USCGC Hickory. If the HICKORY is underway the member is to report to DC1 Virgil Holbrook in USCG Housing in Homer AK. DC1 Holbrook can be reached at (907) 235-2637.

Housing:

There are currently 16- three bedroom and 2- four bedroom family units in USCG Housing in Homer Alaska. You must submit a housing application (CG-5267) if you are married or have dependents who reside with you whether or not you desire government housing. If you do not wish to reside in Government Housing the Housing Officer will review your housing application and grant waivers to live on the economy on a case by case basis. Basic Allowance for Housing rates are as per the DOD’s web site: https://secureapp2.hqda.pentagon.mil/perdiem/bah.html. The Coast Guard also offers Unaccompanied Personal Leased Housing to our single E3’s and E2’s. These apartment style dwellings are located throughout town. Single members or geographical bachelors E4 and above need not submit a housing application.

Duty:

The engineering watches consist of a Journeyman Engineer (JE) and an Engineer of the Watch (EOW). The JEs are 3rd Class Petty Officers and below and the EOWs are 2nd Class Petty Officers and above. But like the bridge watchstanders this ultimately up to the COs discretion. The Engineers stand one watch a day as well.

Questions and Answers

Q: I have not received my relocation package or I am not getting the information I need?
A: The first step is to try to get a hold of your sponsor. Next try to get a hold of YN2 Haskins. If all fails call the Relocation Office at 1-800-872-4957, ext 317, then 5.

Q: Should I drive my Vehicle?
A: Yes, if you have a reliable form of transportation. It is recommended however that you get it inspected by your local mechanic before you start the trip. There are very few service stations on the Al-Can Highway. A lot of the Al-Can is still gravel so it is recommended that you pick up a full size spare. If you do not have a reliable form of transportation, ship your vehicle.

Q: Should I drive or take the ferry?
A: The trip through Canada is a very beautiful and fun trip. The trip on the Alaskan Marine Highway is also a beautiful trip. It is nice to relax for a couple of days. The one draw back to the ferry is that you are on the ferry’s schedule. Make sure if you decide to utilize the Alaskan Marine Highway that you make reservations well ahead of time. http://www.akferry.org/ or 1-800-526-6731

Q: Do I need to have four wheel drive vehicle?
A: No. It is however recommended that you have a four wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicle. Front wheel drive vehicles do well up here as well. With a rear wheel drive vehicle you just have to be a little more cautious. It is also recommended that you purchase a set of studded tires for winter driving.

Q: I want to bring my motorcycle; can I ride it up there?
A: Yes. Some of the HICKORY’s crew have motorcycles and a lot of times with the CO’s permission bring them on long trips. We do make an annual trip to Juneau for Buoy Tender Round Up. You can count on going to the yards or to Honolulu, Hawaii at lease once during your tour here. USCG regulations require that you wear a helmet, even though Alaskan state law does not.

Q: I am a single Non-rate should I bring any household goods?
A: Yes. The apartment style dwellings that you will receive are unfurnished. It is not however advised you bring over your weight allowance (5000 lbs). Most people bring a bed, TV, DVD/VCR, a computer and anything else you need. Pets are not allowed in the UPLH.
