Sailor of the Quarter

01 July 2011 through 30 September 2011

SN Eric Dawson

SN Eric Dawson has been selected as CGC WASHINGTON’s Sailor of the Quarter for the period of July 2011 through September 2011.

During this time period, CGC WASHINGTON was undergoing a major dry dock availability period and major overhaul of her hull and decks.  As the leading Seaman for this period, SN Dawson played a critical role in the timely completion of several deck and painting projects and his leadership and experience allowed for the First Lieutenant and Deck Petty Officers to focus on contract work completion.

Leading the deck department non-rates, he coordinated the removal and storage of all deck boxes, ladders, the small boat cradle and soft patch storage lockers.  SN Dawson quickly identified the need for a work space protected from the elements and used proper purchasing procedures to acquire a removable awning.  He ensured the quality of preparing, priming and painting all of these items and oversaw the timely completion of the same.

When the First Lieutenant determined that the blocks for the small boat cradle need to be replaced, SN Dawson offered to assist BM3 Lawellin on this project.  Together, they created a quality product and developed an innovative solution to attaching the felt covering to the blocks.

During the last several weeks of the dry dock period, Deck Department completed the sanding, priming and painting of the superstructure.  Working the night shift with BM2 Toner, they were able to complete a majority of the painting project.  SN Dawson also demonstrated leadership and initiative during day work those last several weeks while he led the Deck non-rates in finishing all painting projects while the Petty Officers conducted final inspections.

Additionally, SN Dawson's pride in the WASHINGTON and attention to detail was noticed as he spent time on duty adding fancy work to several stanchions and flagstaffs for both protection and aesthetic effect.

SN Dawson's teamwork, dedication and initiative has set a high standard aboard WASHINGTON and are in keeping with the Coast Guard core values of Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty – Bravo Zulu!
