Deputy Commander, Sector Columbia River
Captain Len R. Tumbarello
Captain
Len R. Tumbarello was born in St.
Louis, Missouri.
He entered the Coast Guard in 1985 and is a 1989 graduate of the U.S.
Coast Guard Academy, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Management/Economics. He earned
his Masters of Business Administration through Averett University in
Danville, Virginia in 2005.
Captain Tumbarello began his career aboard the USCGC
CITRUS, homeported in Coos Bay, Oregon where he served as Deck Watch Officer
and First Lieutenant from 1989 to 1991.
During that period, he was involved in several fishery patrols along
the Oregon and Washington coasts and he personally conducted 250 Law
enforcement boardings. In the
fall of 1991, he was then transferred to the El Paso Intelligence Center
(EPIC) where he served as a Maritime Intelligence Analyst for the Bahamian
Section for two years. In 1994,
CAPT Tumbarello was assigned to the USCGC STEADFAST, homeported in Astoria,
Oregon where he served as the Operations Officer until 1997.
During his tour on STEADFAST, he coordinated and directed several
high tempo Law Enforcement patrols off the coast of Mexico while working in
conjunction with JIATF West. In
1997, CAPT Tumbarello was selected to be the Surface Operations Officer at
Group North Bend in Oregon.
During his tenure there, he supervised and directed mission execution of
Stations
Yaquina Bay,
Umpqua River,
Coos Bay
and Chetco River until the summer of 2000. CAPT
Tumbarello served as the Group Astoria’s Surface Operations Officer in
Warrenton, Oregon from 2000 until 2002.
CAPT Tumbarello has been involved in several high profile Coast Guard
Boat Force issues, such as, retirement of the 44’ MLB fleet and transition
to 47’ MLB, UTL replacements with RB-Ss, Personal Protective Equipment
shortfalls, improvement of Group Ready for Operations and the National Motor
Lifeboat School’s Standardization program, station manning needs, and
workload reduction initiatives.
From 2002 to 2006, CAPT Tumbarello served as the Assistant Chief, Atlantic
Area/District Five Office of Incident Management in Portsmouth, VA.
In that position, CAPT Tumbarello was the program manager for four CG
Sectors, two Sector Field Offices, 2 Air Stations and 37 Stations.
He served as the Sector Seattle Response Chief from 2006 to 2008 and
oversaw the safe and effective execution of all aspects of Ports, Waterways
and Coastal Security, Law Enforcement, Search and Rescue and Pollution
Response and Investigation for entire Puget Sound Captain of the Port zone.
From 2008 to 2010 he served as Sector
Seattle’s Deputy Commander and assisted the Captain of the Port in the
execution of all Coast Guard missions throughout Puget Sound.
He managed and oversaw 700+ Active Duty, Reserve, Civilian and
Auxiliary personnel. He is now
the Sector Columbia River Deputy Commander.
CAPT Tumbarello’s
personal decorations include a Meritorious Service Medal, three Coast Guard
Commendation medals, two Coast Guard Achievement medals, a Commandant’s
Letter of Commendation and two National Defense Service Ribbons.
He is married to the former, Holly Bildner of
St. Louis, Missouri.
CAPT Tumbarello has two daughters Angela (20) and Chelsea (18) and a
son Anthony (9).
