1. THE POLICY RESTRICTING THE USE OF AUTOMATICALLY INFLATING PFDS EXCLUSIVELY TO OPEN BOATS DIRECTED BY REF A IS RESCINDED.
2. AUTOMATIC OR MANUAL INFLATING PFDS MAY BE USED BY ACTIVE DUTY AND RESERVE BOAT FORCES THAT HAVE COMPLETED THE PERFORMANCE QUALIFICATION STANDARDS CONTAINED IN REF B ON ALL BOAT TYPES AT OPERATIONAL COMMANDERS DISCRETION. THOSE COMMANDS THAT HAVE EXERCISED THE OPTION TO SWITCH AUTOMATIC INFLATION SYSTEMS TO MANUAL INFLATION SYSTEMS DISCUSSED IN REF C MAY CONTINUE TO USE THOSE RETRO-FITTED PFDS. 3. AUXILIARY BOAT CREW (UNDER ORDERS) SHALL WEAR THE APPROPRIATE COAST GUARD APPROVED TYPE I, II OR III INHERENTLY BUOYANT OR COAST GUARD APPROVED AUTOMATIC INFLATABLE PFD AT OPERATIONAL COMMANDERS DISCRETION. AUXILIARY PERSONAL WATERCRAFT OPERATORS SHALL ONLY USE INHERENTLY BUOYANT TYPE III PFDS WITH A MINIMUM DYNAMIC STRENGTH TEST RATING OF 50 MILES PER HOUR.
4. EGRESS EVALUATIONS, IDENTIFIED IN REF D, OF THE VARIOUS PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE (PFD) TYPES USED BY COAST GUARD CREW MEMBERS ARE COMPLETE. THE EVALUATION PROCESS IDENTIFIED EGRESS HAZARDS THAT WOULD TYPICALLY BE ENCOUNTERED BY COAST GUARD BOAT CREW AND BOARDING TEAM MEMBERS IN CAPSIZED BOATS. LESSONS LEARNED FROM THIS PROCESS HAVE INDICATED THAT THE FLOTATION CHARACTERISTICS AND EGRESS HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH INFLATABLE VERSUS INHERENTLY BUOYANT PFDS ARE NEARLY EQUAL.
5. RETAIN A COPY OF THIS ALCOAST IN THE FRONT OF REFS B AND E PENDING PROMULGATION OF THE NEXT REVISIONS.
6. QUESTIONS MAY BE DIRECTED TO KNEPRUD(AT)COMDT.USCG.MIL.
