The Pacific Northwest is home to some of the roughest bars in the world. Unfortunately some boaters are unaware of the warnings, laws and hazards specific to the Pacific Northwest. Many boating accidents and fatalities in the Pacific Northwest have been attributed to hazardous coastal bar conditions.
The Coast Guard conducts surveillance on the bars during predawn hours to sundown. Each station broadcasts bar conditions on VHF Channel 16 as well as a recorded voice line at the station that can be reached by telephone.
Boaters should check closure information and current bar restrictions by contacting your local Coast Guard or visit the Oregon State Marine Board’s website at http://www.oregon.gov/OSMB/coastal_waters/Safety1.shtml
