P.C.S. to Air Station San Francisco

Congratulations on your orders to Air Station San Francisco and
welcome to the Bay Area!

I am eager to get you here and integrated into the great team we have at Air Station San Francisco. However, I am well aware that the challenges of a permanent change of station are, and should be, your initial concerns. Please let us know what we can do to make this relocation as easy as possible. As it is in most large metropolitan areas, housing is expensive and may involve prolonged commutes. Take the time you need to find a good fit for you and your family. Your sponsor should be a valuable resource in providing "local knowledge" of housing, schools, and commute estimates. Feel free to bounce proposed housing alternatives off your sponsor (or another air station member who lives in that neighborhood) to reality check a final decision. Once you have yourself and family settled and can focus on the Coast Guard, we will get you involved in the great missions performed by Air Station San Francisco! I'm confident you'll enjoy your tour of duty at this station, and the many cultural and recreational activities available in San Francisco. Again, welcome to the Bay Area!

Air Station San Francisco supports Coast Guard missions safely and effectively as an integral member of the Eleventh Coast Guard District / PACAREA Team. Primary missions include: Search and Rescue, Homeland Security, Enforcement of Laws and Treaties, Aids to Navigation and Marine Environmental Protection. The people of Air Station San Francisco work together as a team, accomplishing our mission, leading the Coast Guard in operational excellence, and caring for each other. The station has an authorized complement of 19 officers, 85 enlisted and 3 civilians.

Command concerns for single personnel (non-rate specifically): Air Station San Francisco has no barracks available. Some issues you will need to address include rent, deposits for electricity, water, telephone, basic furniture and food costs. Personnel should also be aware that they would need transportation to and from the unit. The command understands this sometime creates a hardship for the member and is willing to help (Mutual Assistance Loans are available.)

Coast Guard government-owned family housing is available in the San Francisco Bay Area at four locations for officers and enlisted personnel with families (Alameda, Concord, Novato and Moffett Field.)

The Alameda site, approx. 25 miles from CGAS SF, has condominiums and duplexes in a close-knit CG community conveniently located close to CG Island. ISC Alameda Housing Office: (510) 769-0831 or (510) 437-3243

The Novato site has large single family homes, duplexes, and condominiums located in a rural/small town setting about 30 miles from CGAS SF. Novato Housing Office: (415) 382-8584

The Moffett Housing Community is approximately 25 miles south of CGAS SF. The Moffett site has two three and four bedroom units. Some of the two bedroom town-home units have been converted to bachelor, unaccompanied. The Moffett community includes a full-service commissary and exchange on the adjoining NASA Ames facility. Moffett Federal Airfield Housing Office: (650) 564-9490 or visit their website at

The Concord site is the Bay Area's newest housing area. The Coast Guard Housing Office has provided a fact sheet for your reference.

Assignment to government-owned family housing is not mandatory. Families may only apply for housing at one site, which should be clearly noted on your application. For wait time projections and more information on housing contact the appropriate housing office.

Applications for the Housing programs will require:

  1. Application For Assignment To Military Housing CG-5267
  2. a current BAH/Dependency/Emergency Data and SGLI Validation (CG-4170A) from your current ADMIN Office or PERSRU
  3. Copy of your travel orders (CG-5131).
  4. Marriage Certificate and/or Birth Certificate.

More information on the number of bedrooms you qualify for can be found in the Coast Guard Housing Manual, COMDTINST M11101.13(series) Table 6-3.

The San Francisco BAH and COLA rates may be found at the Per Diem, Travel and Transportation Allowance Committee website.

Due to the high cost of housing in the San Francisco area and the time lag in receiving travel claim payments, it is recommended that you arrive with $2000.00 to $2500.00 in available funds for housing, deposits, etc.

The Navy Lodge, located at Moffett Federal Airfield, Mt. View, is an option for temporary housing in the Bay Area for military families. You can reach The Navy Lodge by calling 1-800-NAVY-INN or visit their website at
