Captain Hatfield assumed his duties as Chief of Staff, Eleventh Coast Guard District in June of 2013. He most recently served as the Chief of Response, Eleventh Coast Guard District from 2012 to 2013 where he was responsible for Coast Guard Search and Rescue; Law Enforcement; Port, Waterways, and Coastal Security; Marine Environmental Response; and Intelligence Operations across 3.3 million square miles of coastal and offshore waters extending 1,000 nautical miles offshore from the northern California border south to the Colombian and Ecuador border in South America.
Captain Hatfield is a career Cutterman and has served aboard seven cutters. He previously served afloat as Commanding Officer USCGC WAESCHE (WMSL-751) homeported in Alameda, California; Executive Officer as part of the commissioning crew and plankowner, USCGC BERTHOLF (WMSL-750) homeported in Alameda, California; Commanding Officer USCGC ALEX HALEY (WMEC-39) homeported in Kodiak, Alaska; Commanding Officer USCGC ALERT (WMEC-630) homeported in Astoria, Oregon; Executive Officer USCGC ACTIVE (WMEC-618) homeported in Port Angeles, Washington; Operations Officer USCGC RESOLUTE (WMEC-620) homeported in Astoria, Oregon; and as a Deck Watch Officer and Weapons Department Head on USCGC MIDGETT (WHEC-726) homeported in Alameda, California.
His previous staff assignments include serving as Chief, Pacific Area Response and Chief, Pacific Area Maritime Patrol Forces Management and Allocation in Alameda, California; Chief, Eleventh District Law Enforcement and Intelligence Branch in Alameda, California; Coast Guard Liaison Officer to the Joint Intelligence Center Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii; Assistant Facilities Engineer at Support Center Kodiak, Alaska; and as the Law Enforcement Detachment Program Manager on the Operations, Law Enforcement, and Intelligence Staff for the Seventh District in Miami, Florida.
Captain Hatfield is a 1985 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, earning a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering. He subsequently earned a Masters Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the College of Naval Command and Staff, U. S. Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island in 1999.
Captain Hatfield has been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, five Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medals, two Coast Guard Commendation Medals, two Coast Guard Achievement Medals, a permanent Cutterman’s Insignia, and numerous other operational and unit awards.
A native of Livingston, Montana, Captain Hatfield is married to the former Amber Ashenfelter of North Bend, Oregon. A graduate of Oregon State University, Amber holds a bachelor's degree in Fisheries Science and a teaching degree from Dominican University. They have four daughters, Kelsy, Brianna, Jenna, and Ashley.
