Lieutenant Thomas M. Stokes, USCG

Commanding Officer

Lieutenant Stokes obtained his commission from Officer Candidate School in 2002 after serving as a Telecommunication Specialist since his enlistment in the Coast Guard in 1987.

Before assuming command of Station New London, Lieutenant Stokes served as the Leadership and Management Section Chief of Officer Candidate School (OCS) at the Leadership Development Center in New London, CT. He was responsible for the military development, leadership instruction, and overall supervision of candidates for OCS, Reserve Officer Candidate Indoctrination, Direct Commission Officer, and College Student Pre-Commissioning programs with an annual throughput of over 300 students. Prior to this assignment he was assigned as the Assistant Surface Operations Officer and Operations Center Officer at Group/Air Station Atlantic City. His responsibilities included standing duty as a Group Duty Officer (GDO) where he coordinated the prosecution of Search and Rescue cases, Law Enforcement, Homeland Security, and pollution response operations. He also served as the Command Security Officer responsible for promulgating and implementing security programs, policies, and procedures; the Rescue-21 project officer accountable for the Initial Operating Capability (IOC) of the Rescue-21 system in the Group/Air Station Atlantic City area of responsibility, and as the Auxiliary liaison responsible for issuing over 700 Auxiliary orders a year.

Lieutenant Stokes’ other assignments include: Assistant Telecommunications Specialist in Charge at Coast Guard Activities New York; a Watch Supervisor, Boarding Team Member and Landing Signal Officer on U.S. Coast Guard Cutter DALLAS; as a radio watch stander at Group Woods Hole and COMMSTA Kodiak; and as a Seaman on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter TAMPA.

He has been awarded the Coast Guard Commendation Medal (3), Coast Guard Achievement Medal, Commandant’s Letter of Commendation Ribbon (2), Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal (4), National Defense Medal (2), Antarctica Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal (2), and several other Unit and Team Awards.
