Response Department

The Sector Northern New England Response Department's primary role is responding to and mitigating maritime incidents within Sector Northern New England's area of responsibility. The Response Department combines the traditional functions of a Group Operations Department with the Environmental Protection and Port Security functions of the Marine Safety Program.

Response personnel liaise with other federal, state, and local agencies to ensure any oil spills or hazardous material releases are properly mitigated whenever an incident occurs, or threatens to occur.

The Response Department is divided into two divisions, Enforcement and Incident Management.

Sector Northern New England has a variety of oil spill response equipment within the area of responsibility should a maritime pollution incident occur. Response personnel provide Federal On-Scene Coordinator oversight to any incidents requiring the use of the Oil Spill Trust Liability Fund.

The Response Department coordinates with the local Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotillas and other maritime stakeholders to conduct pollution prevention patrols and harbor safety patrols throughout the coastal regions of Maine and New Hampshire. These patrols provide maritime environmental awareness and education and help identify any potential hazards within the marine environment.

To report any spills of oil or hazardous materials please contact the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802.
