A native of Laurinburg, North Carolina, LCDR John Singletary enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1988 and was assigned as a deck seaman aboard USCGC GENTIAN (WLB 290) in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina upon graduation from Recruit Training Center, Cape May, NJ.
Advancing to the rank of Boatswain’s Mate Third Class in 1990, he was transferred to CG Station Milford Haven, Virginia. He completed a follow-on tour serving as Operations Petty Officer at CG Aids to Navigation Team Milford Haven, Virginia in 1994 prior to assuming command of Aids to Navigation Team Kennebec, Virginia in 1996. Returning to the afloat community in 1998, he served as First Lieutenant on USCGC WHITE HOLLY (WLM 541) in New Orleans, Louisiana followed by a tour as Executive Petty Officer onboard USCGC WHITE SUMAC (WLM 540). Upon advancing to Chief Boatswain’s Mate in 2000, he reported to USCGC KENNEBEC (WLIC 802) in Portsmouth, Virginia to assume the role of Executive Petty Officer. Commissioned as a Chief Warrant Officer in 2003, he was assigned to USCGC JUNIPER (WLB 201) in Newport, Rhode Island as First Lieutenant. Returning to the waters of the Fifth Coast Guard District, he commanded USCGC SLEDGE (WLIC 75303) home ported in Baltimore, Maryland from 2006 to 2008. Promoted to Lieutenant in 2008, he was assigned as Executive Officer aboard USCGC WILLOW (WLB 202) in Newport, Rhode Island where he served until assuming command of USCGC KATHERINE WALKER(WLM 552) from 2010 to 2012. Since 2012, Lieutenant Commander Singletary has served as both the Black Hull Cutter Manager and Chief of Cutter Management on the Operational Planning Branch Staff at First Coast Guard District in Boston, Massachusetts.
Lieutenant Commander Singletary’s decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with “O” device, four Coast Guard Commendation Medals with “O” device, three Coast Guard Achievement Medals with “O” device, three Commandant Letters of Commendation with “O” device, four Coast Guard Good Conduct Medals, and various other unit and service decorations.
Lieutenant Commander Singletary is married to the former Heather Sutman of Stonington, Connecticut. They have four children: Marin, Bryce, Tyler, and Michael.
