Joseph A. Servidio assumed duty as Chief of Staff, First Coast Guard District, in June 2009, after having served in the Pentagon as a national security strategist on the Chief of Staff of the Air Force Strategic Studies Group. He has served in a variety of positions including as an engineer onboard the Coast Guard Icebreaker NORTHWIND, as a commercial vessel inspector and investigator at Marine Inspection Office New York, as a supervisor of the Coast Guard’s Resident Office in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, and as an instructor and School Chief at the Coast Guard Training Center in Yorktown, Virginia. Captain Servidio has served as Executive Office at Marine Safety Office San Diego and as Commanding Officer of Marine Safety Office San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 2002 he assumed duty as Chief of the Coast Guard’s Office of Compliance, responsible for policy and oversight of commercial vessel and facility safety, security, and environmental protection activities. He served on the team that guided the Coast Guard’s transition from the Department of Transportation to the Department of Homeland Security and was detailed to Secretary Ridge’s staff for the new Department’s stand-up. In 2005 he stood-up and assumed command of Coast Guard Sector Saint Petersburg, responsible for Coast Guard missions along the west coast of Florida. As Sector Commander in he served as Captain of the Port, Federal On-Scene Coordinator, Federal Maritime Security Coordinator, Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator, and Officer in Charge Marine Inspection, leading eight Coast Guard Cutters, five Coast Guard Stations, an Aids to Navigation Team, and more than 700 active duty and reserve members.
Captain Servidio is a 1982 graduate of the U. S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Ocean Engineering. He has also earned two Master of Science in Engineering Degrees from the University of Michigan (Naval Architecture / Marine Engineering and Mechanical Engineering), and a Master of Science Degree in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan.
Captain Servidio‘s military awards include two Legion of Merit Medals, four Meritorious Service Medals, the Transportation 9-11 Medal, three Coast Guard Commendation Medals, and two Coast Guard Achievement Medals.
