Today, we honored Seaman Norman Wood Finch, who served in WWI, and presented his Great-nephews, Stephen and Bradley, with a Purple Heart for making the ultimate sacrifice on Sept. 26, 1918. Finch enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard on June 7, 1917, and served as a crewmember aboard the Tampa. Tampa was one of the six Coast Guard Cutters, assigned to the Navy, on convoy duty in European theater during World War I. The Tampa was torpedoed by a German submarine and sunk with all hands aboard on Sept. 26, 1918, in Bristol Channel, England. Many family, friends and the community helped honor Norman Finch today including U.S. Representative Bill Keating, USCG Station Chatham, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England, Brewster Police Department, Brewster Fire Department, Harwich Police, Harwich Fire Department, & Patriot Guard Riders, Inc. #Honor #Respect #DevotiontoDuty

We recently lost a pioneer for women in our service. YNC Eleanor Buker (Gilford) passed the bar age 99. Ms. Buker served as a SPAR (women's branch of the CG Reserve) during WWII from 1943 to 1946 and remained a strong supporter of the Coast Guard throughout her life. After enlisting, Eleanor served in the research department at headquarters in Washington, D.C., sang in their chorus, and was honorably discharged at the end of the war with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. When she returned to Danvers, MA, she lived with the family of her sister Marion and was married at their home to Melvin W. Buker on Nov. 15, 1946. The couple moved to Essex, MA, and had a daughter and a son. In the summer of 2005, she and her son, Bill Buker, visited Coast Guard Headquarters where she was surprised with a birthday cake and ceremony for her 85th birthday. "Like so many of that generation, Eleanor was a real patriot," said Vice Admiral Sally Brice-O'Hara, USCG (ret). "She was especially proud of the Coast Guard and her impact, allowing the men to forward deploy while the women competently got the job done in the wide variety of areas they served. Eleanor was sharp as a tack, gracious, had a beautiful smile while talking about her experiences in uniform, and always remained thankful for the opportunity to serve the nation." Eleanor later established a scholarship endowment with the Coast Guard Foundation that awarded its first scholarship this year. Eleanor's legacy and leadership will endure for ages to come.
