The pharmacy is staffed by a PHS Pharmacist and “C” school trained Pharmacy Technicians. The Pharmacy Department provides pharmaceuticals as well as drug and immunization information to over 6000 beneficiaries and provides direct support to Coast Guard units in it’s Area of Responsibility.
This includes the USCGCs TAHOMA, CAMPBELL, RELIANCE, SENECA, SPENCER, ESCANABA, WILLOW, JUNIPER.
The shore units that are supported include USCG Sector Southeastern New England, Sector Northern New England, Integrated Support Center Boston, Sector Field Office Southwest Harbor, Station Rockland, Port Security Unit 301, Marine Safety and Security Team 91110.
The pharmacy maintains a formulary based on the DoD Basic Core Formulary (BCF) which is updated quarterly. Additional items may be added based on the needs and requirements of the clinic medical staff. Copies of the current clinic formulary can be obtained from pharmacy staff. These medications are provided free of charge. For items not available at the clinic, the next best option is the Tricare Mail Order Pharmacy which will provide a 90 days supply of medications at the Copay amounts of $3 (generic), $9 (brand), or $22 (Non-formulary).
The pharmacy will fill all prescriptions that are on the clinic formulary for all entitled beneficiary (Tricare for Life, Tricare Prime, Tricare Extra, Tricare Standard). The pharmacy is prohibited from filling prescriptions for beneficiaries enrolled in U.S. Family Health Plan commonly referred to as Brighton-Marine.
New prescriptions can only be filled when the pharmacist is
on premises. This does not impact medication refills which
can be processed during normal business hours.
The standard business hours for the pharmacy are Monday thru Friday 0730 to 1530 with lunch closures from
1130 to 1300. In addition, the pharmacy is closed Wednesday mornings and Friday afternoons. The clinic and pharmacy is also closed for all Federal holidays and for command functions. For the most current information on closures, please call 508-968-6571.
Requirements for prescriptions are as follows:
- must be legible
- provider’s name must be signed with ink (no electronic or stamped signatures)
- must be within 12 months from the date written (7 days for controlled substances).
The pharmacy will provide a 90 day supply of medications as applicable and as budgets constraints allow. For controlled substances, the maximum quantity allowed is a 30 day supply and no refills are allowed. The exception is for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD) and for seizure disorders treated with phenobarbital where the pharmacy can dispense a 90 day supply at a time.

Prescription transfers to or from other pharmacies can only be performed when the Pharmacist is on premises and it can only be done once. This means that if a prescription is transferred out, it cannot be transferred back to Kaehler Memorial and a new prescription will be required from your physician.
The pharmacy maintains an Over-the-Counter (OTC) Program that makes available a variety of OTC items to eligible beneficiaries. These items are available directly from the pharmacy with a limit of two items per week per family. A current valid military I.D. (Active Duty, Dependant, Retiree) is required in order to receive these items.
