
Lieutenant Commander Scott A. Rae, USCG
Commanding Officer
Lieutenant Commander Scott Rae grew up in the Midwest and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Michigan University in 1988. He enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1990, upon graduation was assigned to Aids to Navigation Team Georgetown located on the Intracoastal Waterway near Charleston, SC. There he qualified as a small boat coxswain and became a Boatswain Mate Third Class. Soon after, he was transferred to Coast Guard Station Curtis Bay in Baltimore, MD. He quickly advanced to Boatswain Mate Second Class and was in charge of a 10 person duty section conducting search and rescue, law enforcement and environmental protection on the Upper Chesapeake Bay.
Petty Officer Rae transferred to his first sea duty assignment in 1995 aboard Coast Guard Cutter POINT HIGHLAND homeported in Chincoteague, VA. There, he was the Operations Petty Officer and qualified as an underway Officer of the Deck. He advanced to Boatswain Mate First Class and was transferred to Coast Guard Station Chincoteague, VA as the Executive Petty Officer. During that time, Petty Officer Rae was named the Enlisted Person of the Year for Coast Guard District Five in 1997. Petty Officer Rae was accepted to Officer Candidate School in the fall of 1999. In May of 2000 he graduated as an Ensign and was transferred to Coast Guard Cutter BRITOL BAY with buoy barge in Detroit, MI where he served as the Operations Officer. Ensign Rae was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade while aboard BRISTOL BAY and was transferred to Coast Guard Cutter ADAK as the Executive Officer in Sandy Hook, NJ. Four months after reporting aboard, ADAK and the crew deployed to the Middle East. Lieutenant Junior Grade Rae spent 2003 in the Persian Gulf, patrolling the territorial seas of Iraq.
After the overseas tour, Lieutenant Junior Grade Rae temporarily transferred to Coast Guard Group Eastern Shore, Chincoteague, VA as the Deputy Group Commander. While serving as the Deputy Group Commander, Lieutenant Junior Grade Rae was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. Upon completion of the temporary duty, he reported to Coast Headquarters Command Center in Washington DC, where he served as a Command Duty Officer. In July 2007, LT Rae assumed command of Coast Guard Cutter STURGEON BAY and was promoted to LCDR February 1st, 2010.
Lieutenant Commander Rae’s awards include the Permanent Cutterman and Coxswain Insignia, CG Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corp Commendation Medal, CG Achievement Medal, CG Commandants Letter of Commendation, Combat Action Ribbon, Iraq Campaign Medal and several other Unit and Team Awards.
