Shipmates, The attached remarks were delivered with some minor changes. RDML Joe Castillo read the Congressional Resolution separately and few extra comments were added extemporaneously.
It was a difficult but we were proud to stand with the families, friends, and loved ones of the crew of CG 1705. Over 2000 people were there to show their concern, sympathy, and appreciation for the sacrifice made the crew and burden now born by their families. I am proud of the Coast Guard Family and all of those who worked so hard to make sure our heroes were honored and remembered. There are still hard days to come but we will stand by these families.
Air Station Borinquen held a memorial service today. In addition to my comments as Commanding Officer, I read the Commandant's remarks to those in attendance. It made for a clear and consistent message to our members, families and friends.
I received much positive feedback on the remarks and on how well we, the Coast Guard, care for and support our CG family. Thank you for posting the remarks and allowing me to incorporate them into service. Vr mwb
The service was wonderful. many in our Alaska community attended the simulcast. Later on though I heard the same question asked by active duty and civilian alike. Why was there no message from the President? Really, 7 heroes lost on a rescue mission, two more lost on a training mission, and not one word? Many of us were disapointed by that. Prayers and strength to all those left behind.
