Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service – 18 January 2010

Initiated by Congress in 1994, the
Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service transforms the federal holiday honoring Dr. King into a national day of community service. The Day of Service has grown steadily from a local project to a nationwide movement, which perpetuates the life and teachings of Dr. King.

As in previous years, DHS employees are encouraged to participate in voluntary acts of service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Instead of seeing Jan. 18 as just a day off from school or work, the Day of Service seeks to make the holiday a day on, where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together to strengthen their community, bridge social barriers, and move our Nation closer to the “beloved community” that Dr. King envisioned. For more information, and to locate MLK Day volunteer opportunities in your area, go to http://www.mlkday.gov/.

Employees in the Washington, D.C. area who would like to volunteer with other DHS colleagues, should contact the DHS volunteer coordinator, Terry Hill, at terrence.hill@dhs.gov.

Employees and military members who are currently involved in volunteer activities are encouraged to create a record of their volunteer service hours by registering with the President’s Service Award Website http://presidentialserviceawards.gov. The group code for the Coast Guard is RNP-224X.

"United We Serve" is a nationwide service initiative that will help meet growing social needs resulting from the economic downturn. With the knowledge that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things when given the proper tools, President Obama is asking us to come together to help lay a new foundation for growth. This initiative aims to both expand the impact of existing organizations by engaging new volunteers in their work and encourage volunteers to develop their own "do-it-yourself" projects. United We Serve is an initial 81 days of service but will grow into a sustained, collaborative and focused effort to promote service as a way of life for all Americans.
