BSU Seattle
The Assistant Facilities Engineer (AFE) oversees the day-to-day operations of the Maintenance Branch and administers the Preventive Maintenance Program for all BSU facilities, equipment and the maintenance work request system. It is also the responsibility of the AFE to oversee and schedule all crane operations on Pier 36.
As the Public Affairs Officer, the AFE serves as the command's representative on matters involving the public, and forwards newsworthy items to Coast Guard Magazine, Fleet Hometown News Center, D13 Public Affairs, etc.
As Assistant Command Security Officer, the AFE provides security briefings to incoming personnel, and maintains physical security of the BSU complex grounds, buildings, and equipment. The AFE also acts as a liaison with federal and local law enforcement agencies, and assigns and controls the assignment of reserved parking for official and private vehicles for BSU staff and tenant commands.
The Maintenance Mechanic General Foreman (GF) acts as the contracting officer for all maintenance contracts, oversees BSU supported housing, provides review on AFC43 designs, and provides guidance to the maintenance branch.
The GF administers a preventative and routine
maintenance program for local government owned housing. The General
Foreman (GF) also develops specifications and acts as the contracting officer for
the janitorial services, pest control, elevator maintenance, and other
service and construction projects as required. The General Foreman
develops plans, specifications and estimates for minor construction
projects.

Crane Services Policy for BSU Seattle
Crane services at Base Support Unit (BSU) Seattle are usually handled by members of the Maintenance Brach of the Facilities Engineering Division.
The policy for requesting a crane is as follows:
1) Notify Assistant Facilities Engineer (AFE) AT LEAST 48 hours in advance. This is important so that the scheduler can identify potential conflicts between customer needs. Emergencies will be handled on a case-by-case basis; however, you may be required to rent a crane. Bottom line: plan ahead.
2) Notification should be done by email. Customers should address the date and time they would like a crane, the type of work they would like done (and, if possible, the approximate weight of the load), and a point of contact and that POC’s phone number in case the scheduler or crane operator have any questions. Send this email to AFE, LTJG Millward.
3) BSU Seattle cannot provide crane services to contractors or as long as a contract states that the contractor will provide a crane.

Forklift Training Policy for BSU Seattle
Forklift training classes are held once a month by Mr. Frank Ridep and Mr. Mike Malomay in the FE lunchroom in Building 3 at BSU Seattle.
If you have anyone at your unit who you wish to attend, please email Assistant Facilities Engineer (AFE), LTJG Millward to register for Forklift training. Please provide the unit to which the member is attached, the rate, and both first and last names.
There are only 8 spots per class, and they usually fill up quickly. If there is a significant response to get people qualified beyond the capacity of scheduled dates, AFE will try to accommodate by scheduling additional class dates.
Classes start at 0700 and last until approximately 1600. The certification is good for 3 years. The people who will be attending the class should come by the FE area and pick up a Forklift training book a few days prior to the training to facilitate learning the material during the class.
Note:
This class is for people who have never had forklift training or whose certification has lapsed. If any of your personnel have certification that has not lapsed, we can arrange to get them recertified (a much SHORTER class). So far, there are a few people that fit into this category but not enough to fill a class (a minimum for 4 is required). Please contact AFE to schedule a recertification if you or someone at your unit has requirements.
