Base Boston Commanding Officer

Captain Timothy J. Heitsch, USCG

Captain Heitsch is currently the Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Base Boston, responsible for mission support activities that support Coast Guard operations by the First Coast Guard District and its subordinate commands. Base Boston serves as the host command for Sector Boston and several of its sub-units, the Maritime Safety and Security Team Boston, is the homeport for three 270-foot medium endurance cutters, and provides port services for all transient Coast Guard and visiting vessels. It also includes geographically distributed depot-level maintenance functions in Naval Engineering, Electronic Engineering, and Facilities Engineering, and management of Personnel, Finance, Supply, and Procurement, throughout New England, New York and northern New Jersey. His previous assignment was as Chief, Office of Logistics (CG-44) at Coast Guard Headquarters, where he was responsible for Coast Guard logistics policy and management oversight including the Inventory Control Points and associated supply chains, all enterprise logistics information systems, and configuration management. He was also the Operational Logistics Program Manager, providing program oversight for Sector Logistics Departments and Bases.

Previous assignments include Chief of Logistics for Sector New York, Operations Officer for Air Station Elizabeth City, and Chief Logistics Analyst at the Aviation Repair & Supply Center. He also served tours as an operational helicopter pilot at Air Stations Clearwater, Florida, Air Station Sitka, Alaska, and Group/Air Station Astoria, Oregon.

Captain Heitsch initially entered the military in 1978, enlisting in the Air Force Reserves and attending technical training for avionics. In 1982 he entered active duty with the Army, completed flight training and designation as an Army Aviator with subsequent assignments with the 8th Infantry Division in West Germany, and the 7th Special Forces Group at Ft Bragg, North Carolina. In 1988 he entered the Coast Guard through the Direct Commission Aviator program.

Captain Heitsch is a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He has also earned a Master of Arts in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix, and a Master of Science in Computational Operations Research from The College of William & Mary. His military decorations include three Meritorious Service Medals, four Coast Guard Commendation Medals, an Army Commendation Medal, a Coast Guard and two Army Achievement Medals, as well as several other personal and unit awards. During his military career he has qualified in the UH-1, OH-58A/C, UH-60A, HH-3F, and the MH-60J helicopters, held designations as a military Instructor Pilot & Flight Examiner, and holds an FAA Airline Transport Pilot certificate.
