MU1 Wesley Mayhew

MU1 Wesley MayhewMusician 1st Class Wesley Mayhew, bass trombone, is a native of Glasgow, Kentucky. He received a bachelor’s degree from Western Kentucky University and a master’s degree from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, where he is currently pursuing a doctorate. Prior to his appointment as bass trombonist with the U.S. Coast Guard Band in 2008, Wesley performed with the Cincinnati and Indianapolis Symphony Orchestras, the Nashville Symphony, and the Louisville Orchestra, and was a freelance musician and teacher throughout Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Ohio, and West Virginia. In Kentucky, Wesley maintained a regular position as bass trombonist with the Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra and the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra. In addition to performing in ensembles, Wesley has been a finalist for several international trombone competitions, including the Lewis Van Haney Orchestral Excerpt Competition held in Helsinki, Finland, in 2003. He has also been featured as a guest soloist with many groups including the WKU Wind Ensemble, the Larry A. Ryle High School Wind Ensemble, and the Southern Kentucky Concert Band. As a teacher, MU1 Mayhew maintained an active trombone studio throughout the Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati areas, and was also assistant band director at Conner Middle School in Hebron, Kentucky. His primary trombone teachers and musical influences include Peter Norton, David Vining, Ken Haddix, and Jim Beckel.
