R 022218Z NOV 12 ALCOAST 472/12 COMDTNOTE 1000 SUBJ: 30th Birthday of the United States Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Academy 1. Congratulations to the Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Academy on the occasion of your 30th birthday. 2. Thirty years ago, on November 19, 1982, six Master Chief Petty Officers and four Senior Chief Petty Officers graduated from the first convening of the Chief Petty Officers Academy. The motto of that first CPOA class was "We came in the hope that others might follow." And follow they have. In the last thirty years, 215 active duty and reserve classes have graduated from the Academy, providing the Coast Guard with the finest senior enlisted leadership in the world. 3. There have been many significant milestones since that first graduating class. In 1991 the Academy graduated its first international student and its first DoD students. The first class of Reserve Chief Petty Officers graduated in 1993. In 1999 the Coast Guard began requiring all active and reserve members advanced to E-7 to attend the Academy, and in 2006, the Academy graduated two Border Patrol agents, its first Department of Homeland Security partner agency students. This remarkable growth stands as a testament to the quality of instruction at the Academy and the value it provides to our Coast Guard. 4. We rely on the leadership of our Chief Petty Officers to inspire and motivate our crews, to teach and mentor our junior personnel, and to uphold the core values that bind us as Coast Guardsmen. Thank you for your thirty years of fostering and building proficiency in leadership that enables us to continue to be the worlds best Coast Guard. 5. For the Chief Petty Officers Academy: Please read this message at the Graduation Dinner for Class CXC and Reserve Class XXXI and pass on my personal congratulations to the students and staff. 6.
