R 141153Z SEP 12 ALCOAST 409/12 COMDTNOTE 5500 SUBJ: 2012 U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) INFORMATION SYSTEMS SECURITY OFFICER (ISSO) OF THE YEAR SELECTION 1. I am pleased to announce that Mr. Don Wilson, Pacific Area (PACAREA) Information Systems Security Officer (ISSO), has been selected as the 2012 ISSO of the year for the U.S. Coast Guard. In addition, Mr. Wilson has been entered into the DHS ISSO of the year competition. The winner of the DHS ISSO of the year award will be announced at a later date this year. Both awards will be presented at the DHS award ceremony on 18 October 2012 from 1000-1200 at the U.S. Coast Guard Telecommunication and Information Systems Command (TISCOM). 2. This award recognizes the ISSO that has demonstrated loyalty, outstanding performance, commitment, dedication and innovation in implementing information technology (IT) security at their unit (or area of responsibility), leading to a positive impact upon the CG and the DHS Security and Information Assurance Program. The following award criteria were considered in the selection process: A. Outstanding and sustained superior performance of assigned duties. B. Implements information assurance policies with emphasis on continuous monitoring. C. Proactively and enthusiastically mentors and educates users on IT security awareness. D. Availability and responsiveness to users. E. Offers innovative ideas for implementing security. F. Ensures completion of awareness training for their user population. G. Participates in ISSO training programs, provided feedback and suggestions. H. Encourages automation of security practices and tools. I. Maintains visibility in the ISSO community (knowledge sharing, briefings, training slides). J. Responsive to queries regarding the information systems security program. K. Follows through to ensure security problems are addressed in a timely manner. L. Ensures systems that are developed and maintained under the ISSO purview are consistent with System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) guidance. 3. It was extremely difficult for the award board to select only one winner from the outstanding ISSOs who were nominated for the award. 4.
