PROGRAM SELECTEES WILL BE DETERMINED THIS SUMMER BY A SELECTION PANEL TO WORK IN ONE OF FOUR SUB-PROGRAMS: MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION INDUSTRY TRAINING (MEPIT), INVESTIGATIONS INDUSTRY TRAINING (IIT), PORT SAFETY/SECURITY INDUSTRY TRAINING (PSIT), AND MERCHANT MARINE INDUSTRY TRAINING (MMIT). APPLICANTS ARE ASKED TO INDICATE ON THEIR E-RESUME WHETHER THEY WOULD LIKE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR A 1-YEAR ASSIGNMENT AND TO SPECIFY THEIR SPECIFIC INDUSTRY TRAINING SUB-PROGRAM OF CHOICE (I.E. MERCHANT MARINE, MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, INVESTIGATIONS, AND PORT SECURITY/SAFETY). UP TO THREE CANDIDATES MAY BE SELECTED FOR EACH OF THESE FOUR INDUSTRY TRAINING SUB-PROGRAMS. INDUSTRY TRAINING IS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH SHORT-TERM INTERNSHIPS (4-6 MONTHS) OR 1 YEAR ASSIGNMENTS WITH MARITIME INDUSTRY ORGANIZATIONS. SELECTION TO FILL EITHER A 1-YEAR ASSIGNMENT IN A TRAINING ALLOWANCE BILLET (TAB) OR A SHORT TERM INTERNSHIP WILL BE MADE DURING THE SELECTION PANEL. CANDIDATES ARE OFTEN ASSIGNED TO FOLLOW ON FIELD TOURS IN LEADERSHIP POSITIONS REQUIRING HIGH LEVELS OF INDUSTRY INTERFACE OR SIMILAR STAFF TOURS SUCH AS A NATIONAL CENTER OF EXPERTISE. 2. MEPIT: MEPIT PROVIDES A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR EXPERIENCED OFFICERS WITH A MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION BACKGROUND (FOSCR AND/OR PI QUALIFIED) TO GAIN INSIGHT INTO DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL POLLUTION MITIGATION OPERATIONS FROM THE INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE. PAST MEPIT SELECTEES HAVE CONDUCTED THEIR INDUSTRY TRAINING IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS OF EMPHASIS: OIL SPILL REMOVAL, CONTINGENCY PLANNING, NATIONAL LEVEL ORGANIZATIONAL POLICY-MAKING, AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT. PAST TRAINING VENUES HAVE INCLUDED VARIOUS OIL SPILL RESPONSE ORGANIZATIONS, THE AMERICAN PETROLEUM INSTITUTE (API), AND COMPANIES WITHIN THE OIL AND SALVAGE INDUSTRIES. 3. IIT: THE IIT PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR EXPERIENCED INVESTIGATING OFFICERS (IOS). THE GOAL OF IIT IS TO BROADEN AN IOS PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE BASE BY PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES TO GAIN EXTENSIVE INSIGHT AND EXPOSURE INTO THE WORK OF OTHER INVESTIGATIVE ENTITIES, AS WELL AS MERCHANT VESSEL AND MARINE INDUSTRY OPERATIONS. PAST IIT SELECTEES HAVE PARTICIPATED IN SHIP RIDER PROGRAMS AND PERFORMED SHORESIDE INDUSTRY TRAINING WITH SUCH ORGANIZATIONS AS THE NTSB, DEPT OF JUSTICE, VESSEL PILOT ASSOCIATIONS, PORT AUTHORITIES, SHIPPING COMPANIES, ADMIRALTY LAW FIRMS AND MARINE INSURERS. 4. PSIT: THE PSIT PROGRAM AFFORDS EXPERIENCED PREVENTION AND RESPONSE OFFICERS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPAND THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF COMMERCIAL PORT OPERATIONS. IN RECENT YEARS PSIT SELECTEES HAVE CONCENTRATED ON PORT SECURITY/SAFETY OPERATIONS SUCH AS MTSA/TWIC IMPLEMENTATION, FACILITY SAFETY COMPLIANCE, AND LEARNING NEW INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES. 5. MMIT: MMIT IS DESIGNED FOR OFFICERS WITH MARINE INSPECTION EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS. PAST MMIT SELECTEES HAVE CONDUCTED THEIR INDUSTRY TRAINING WITH THE FOLLOWING INDUSTRY GROUPS: OCEAN SHIPPING, OFFSHORE OIL INDUSTRY, GREAT LAKES SHIPPING, INLAND AND OFFSHORE TOWING, SHIPYARDS, SMALL PASSENGER VESSELS, AND CRUISE LINES. 6. IDEAL MARINE INDUSTRY TRAINING APPLICANTS ARE LIEUTENANTS AND LIEUTENANT COMMANDERS WHO HAVE AT LEAST THREE YEARS OF PREVENTION OR RESPONSE FIELD EXPERIENCE AND WHO ARE AUTHORIZED TO WEAR THE TEMPORARY OR PERMANENT MARINE SAFETY INSIGNIA. APPLICANTS SHOULD BE TOUR COMPLETE IN ASSIGNMENT YEAR 2011. 7. SHORT TERM INTERNSHIPS FOR INDUSTRY TRAINING TYPICALLY RANGE FROM 4 TO 6 MONTHS AND ARE CONDUCTED DURING THE APR-SEP TIMEFRAME IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE TRANSFER SEASON. OPERATIONAL DEMANDS SUCH AS OPERATION DEEPWATER HORIZON OR INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES MAY MAKE IT DIFFICULT FOR SOME MEMBERS TO CONDUCT THEIR INDUSTRY TRAINING IN THE TRADITIONAL APR-SEP TIMEFRAME. IN SUCH INSTANCES, REQUESTS FOR ALTERNATIVE SCHEDULES MAY BE PRESENTED TO COMMANDANT (CG-7411) FOR CONSIDERATION ON A CASE-BY-CASE BASIS. 8. APPLICATIONS ARE NOW SUBMITTED VIA THE E-RESUME.
