R 131808Z JUL 12 ALCOAST 333/12 COMDTNOTE 11101 SUBJ: PROHIBITED ITEMS IN COAST GUARD FAMILY HOUSING A. Coast Guard Housing Manual, COMDTINST M11101.13 (series) 1. Based on a recent review of policy prohibiting certain items in Coast Guard-owned family housing it has been determined that outdoor wood burning fire pits present an unacceptable level of risk in terms of resident safety and government liability. In order to ensure the health and welfare of our service members and their families, effective immediately, outdoor wood burning fire pits and chimineas are prohibited in Coast Guard-owned family housing. 2. A wood burning fire pit is defined as any metal or ceramic container of varying size and design, which is designed to create a contained, but open wood fire, generally used as decorative element or for warmth at outdoor social gatherings. 3. Area and Local Housing Officers shall verify that all prohibited items are moved from yards and patios and either placed in storage or completely removed. If any of these items are discovered, a written notice of violation will be issued and the resident will have fifteen days to correct the violation. Waivers to grandfather existing prohibited items, including wood burning fire pits, will not be considered. Failure to comply with Coast Guard regulations and policies may result in eviction from housing. 4. This policy will be incorporated into the next change to Chapter 2.C.7. of Reference (A). 5.
