THE MARINE ENGINEERING ADVANCED EDUCATION PROGRAM IS UNIQUE AND OFFERS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR JUNIOR OFFICERS TO EARN A MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN A WIDE VARIETY OF MARINE ENGINEERING RELATED DISCIPLINES. SELECTEES CAN EARN GRADUATE DEGREES IN NAVAL ARCHITECTURE, MARINE, MECHANICAL, OCEAN OR HUMAN FACTORS ENGINEERING. OFFICERS WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF NEW TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS TAKING PLACE IN THE MARINE INDUSTRY, INCLUDING GREEN SHIPPING TECHNOLOGIES AND OFFSHORE ENERGY EXPLORATION. THESE POSITIONS DIRECTLY PROMOTE THE COAST GUARDS ABILITY TO PROPERLY EXECUTE ITS MARINE SAFETY, SECURITY AND STEWARDSHIP MISSIONS. 7. FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEERING: ONE HIGH PERFORMING OFFICER WILL BE SELECTED TO ATTEND THIS 24-MONTH GRADUATE PROGRAM, LEADING TO A MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEERING (FPE). PAST SELECTEES HAVE ATTENDED EITHER THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND OR WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE. UPON GRADUATION, THIS OFFICER WILL LIKELY APPLY THEIR POSTGRADUATE TRAINING AT THE MARINE SAFETY CENTER OR IN THE OFFICE OF DESIGN AND ENGINEERING STANDARDS, COMDT (CG-ENG-4), WITH SIGNIFICANT POTENTIAL FOR NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL IMPACT IN MARINE SAFETY. FPE INVOLVES THE APPLICATION OF FIRE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING PRINCIPLES TO PROTECT LIFE, PROPERTY, AND THE ENVIRONMENT FROM THE EFFECTS OF FIRE AND SMOKE. THIS OFFICER WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEAD EFFORTS TO APPLY THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN FIRE SCIENCE TO IMPROVE COMMERCIAL MARITIME SAFETY WITH EMPHASIS ON CUTTING EDGE DESIGN PROPOSALS WITHIN THE CRUISE LINE INDUSTRY. THESE POSITIONS DIRECTLY PROMOTE THE COAST GUARDS ABILITY TO PROPERLY EXECUTE ITS MARINE SAFETY, SECURITY AND STEWARDSHIP MISSIONS. 8. ELECTRICAL POWER SYSTEMS AND CONTROLS ENGINEERING: ONE HIGH PERFORMING OFFICER WILL BE SELECTED TO ATTEND THIS 24-MONTH GRADUATE PROGRAM, LEADING TO A MASTERS OF SCIENCE IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING WITH AN EMPHASIS IN POWER SYSTEMS AND/OR CONTROLS. UPON GRADUATION, THIS OFFICER WILL APPLY THEIR POSTGRADUATE TRAINING AT THE MARINE SAFETY CENTER OR IN THE OFFICE OF DESIGN AND ENGINEERING STANDARDS, COMDT (CG-ENG-3), WITH SIGNIFICANT POTENTIAL FOR NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL IMPACT IN MARINE SAFETY. MEMBERS WHO ARE SELECTED WILL SPEARHEAD APPLICATION OF ENGINEERING STANDARDS TO CRITICAL ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS ON BOARD ALL CLASSES OF COMMERCIAL VESSELS, INCLUDING DYNAMICALLY POSITIONED OFF SHORE OIL FACILITIES AND VESSELS WITH NEW HYBRID TECHNOLOGIES. THESE VESSELS EMPLOY A WIDE RANGE OF ELECTRICAL GENERATION, DISTRIBUTION AND POWER MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS, FROM VERY BASIC TO COMPLEX COMPUTER CONTROLLED SYSTEMS, AS WOULD BE SEEN IN SMALL LANDBASED ELECTRICAL SUBSTATIONS. 9. CHEMICAL ENGINEERING: ONE OFFICER WILL BE SELECTED TO ATTEND THIS 24-MONTH GRADUATE PROGRAM, LEADING TO A MASTER OF SCIENCE IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING. A DEGREE IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING TRADITIONALLY PREPARES GRADUATES TO IMPROVE INDUSTRIAL SCALE TRANSFORMATIONS OF RAW AND INTERMEDIATE MATERIALS TO MORE VALUABLE PRODUCTS THROUGH PHYSICAL, BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL PROCESSES. THROUGH THE YEARS, AND WITH INCREASING SPEED, CHEMICAL ENGINEERING HAS EXPANDED TO INCLUDE, AMONG OTHERS, STUDIES IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES, NANOTECHNOLOGY, BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS AND ALTERNATIVE FUELS. CHEMICAL ENGINEERING IS AN EXCITING AND DYNAMIC APPLICATION OF MATH, PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY, AND BIOCHEMISTRY TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE. FOR COAST GUARD PURPOSES, CHEMICAL ENGINEERING PROVIDES THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND A WIDE VARIETY OF COMMERCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES RELATED TO SUBSTANCES CARRIED ON BOARD VESSELS. GRADUATES CAN EXPECT TO BE ASSIGNED TO THE OFFICE OF DESIGN AND ENGINEERING STANDARDS, HAZARDOUS MATERIALS, COMDT (CG-ENG-5), OR THE MARINE SAFETY CENTER. DUTIES INCLUDE ENSURING THE SAFE HANDLING AND TRANSPORT OF BULK AND PACKAGED HAZARDOUS MATERIALS, REVIEWING VESSEL AND FACILITY VAPOR CONTROL SYSTEMS, ANALYZING NEW CHEMICAL CARGOES TO ESTABLISH REQS FOR THEIR SAFE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE CARRIAGE, AND CONDUCTING VESSEL PLAN REVIEWS. GRADUATES ALSO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE PART OF ESTABLISHING NEW DESIGN AND CARRIAGE REQUIREMENTS FOR NOVEL VESSELS, SUCH AS THOSE CARRYING LIQUEFIED CARGOES. BY OVERSEEING THE HANDLING AND CARRIAGE OF CARGOES, CHEMICAL ENGINEERING GRADUATES ENSURE THE SAFETY OF MARINERS, VESSELS, AND THE MARINE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM AND HELP FULFILL THE COAST GUARDS CHARGE AS STEWARDS OF THE ENVIRONMENT.
