INDUSTRY TRAINING IS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH SHORT-TERM INTERNSHIPS (4-6 MONTHS) OR 1 YEAR ASSIGNMENTS WITH MARITIME INDUSTRY ORGANIZATIONS AND ASSOCIATIONS. SELECTION TO FILL EITHER A 1-YEAR ASSIGNMENT IN A TRAINING ALLOWANCE BILLET (TAB) OR A SHORT TERM INTERNSHIP WILL BE MADE DURING THE SELECTION PANEL. UP TO THREE CANDIDATES MAY BE SELECTED FOR EACH OF THESE FOUR INDUSTRY TRAINING SUB-PROGRAMS. 2. MEPIT: MEPIT PROVIDES A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR EXPERIENCED OFFICERS WITH A MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION BACKGROUND (FOSCR AND/OR PI QUALIFIED) TO GAIN INSIGHT INTO DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL POLLUTION MITIGATION OPERATIONS FROM THE INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE. PAST MEPIT SELECTEES HAVE CONDUCTED THEIR INDUSTRY TRAINING IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS OF EMPHASIS: OIL SPILL REMOVAL, CONTINGENCY PLANNING, NATIONAL LEVEL ORGANIZATIONAL POLICY-MAKING, AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT. PAST TRAINING VENUES HAVE INCLUDED VARIOUS OIL SPILL RESPONSE ORGANIZATIONS, THE AMERICAN PETROLEUM INSTITUTE (API), AND COMPANIES WITHIN THE OIL AND SALVAGE INDUSTRIES. 3. IIT: IIT IS DESIGNED FOR QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED INVESTIGATING OFFICERS (IOS). THE GOAL OF IIT IS TO BROADEN AN IOS PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE BASE BY PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES TO GAIN EXTENSIVE INSIGHT AND EXPOSURE INTO THE WORK OF OTHER INVESTIGATIVE ENTITIES, AS WELL AS MERCHANT VESSEL AND MARINE INDUSTRY OPERATIONS. PAST IIT SELECTEES HAVE PARTICIPATED IN SHIP RIDER PROGRAMS AND PERFORMED SHORESIDE INDUSTRY TRAINING WITH SUCH ORGANIZATIONS AS THE NTSB, DEPT OF JUSTICE, VESSEL PILOT ASSOCIATIONS, PORT AUTHORITIES, SHIPPING COMPANIES, ADMIRALTY LAW FIRMS AND MARINE INSURERS. 4. PSIT: PSIT AFFORDS EXPERIENCED PREVENTION AND RESPONSE OFFICERS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPAND THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF COMMERCIAL PORT OPERATIONS. PSIT SELECTEES ARE EXPECTED TO CONCENTRATE ON PORT SAFETY AND/OR SECURITY ISSUES SUCH AS MTSA/TWIC IMPLEMENTATION AND COMPLIANCE, FACILITY SAFETY COMPLIANCE, CONTAINERIZED OR EXPLOSIVE HANDLING OPERATIONS, MARITIME TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM RECOVERY, AND NOVEL INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES. PSIT SELECTEES FOR THE ONE YEAR PROGRAM SHOULD FOCUS ON A SPECIFIC ISSUE OR INDUSTRY, TO INCLUDE PROGRAMS WITH ESTABLISHED MARITIME INDUSTRY ORGANIZATIONS OR ASSOCIATIONS. PSIT SELECTEES FOR THE 4-6 MONTH PROGRAM CAN CHOOSE A SPECIFIC ISSUE OR INDUSTRY, BUT MAY ALSO DEVELOP A PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES A BROADENED EXPERIENCE. PAST PSIT SELECTEES HAVE CONCENTRATED ON LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS FACILITIES, SAFETY AND SECURITY CHALLENGES AT MAJOR PORT AUTHORITIES, AND THE PETROCHEMICAL SUPPLY CHAIN. PSIT APPLICANTS SHOULD HAVE A FACILITY INSPECTOR QUALIFICATION. 5. MMIT: MMIT IS DESIGNED FOR OFFICERS WITH MARINE INSPECTION EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS. PAST MMIT SELECTEES HAVE CONDUCTED THEIR INDUSTRY TRAINING WITH THE FOLLOWING INDUSTRY GROUPS: OCEAN SHIPPING, OFFSHORE OIL INDUSTRY, GREAT LAKES SHIPPING, INLAND AND OFFSHORE TOWING, SHIPYARDS, SMALL PASSENGER VESSELS, AND CRUISE LINES. 6. BEGINNING THIS YEAR SPECIFIC PAYBACK BILLETS (FIELD AND STAFF) FOLLOWING INDUSTRY TRAINING HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED.
