SUBJ: ARMED FORCES DAY
1. Saturday, May 19, is Armed Forces Day.  On this day, our nation
celebrates your service in the Armed Forces.  This years theme is
Keeping America Strong and Secure, United in Purpose - Steadfast in
Service.
2. The Coast Guard is unique among the Armed Forces.  We have
distinctive authorities, competencies and capabilities not found in
any other organization that enable us to protect those on the sea,
protect America from threats delivered by sea, and protect the sea
itself.  While many of these duties are humanitarian in nature, we
are at all times an armed force and military service, and stand with
the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps in joint commitment to
protect and defend our Nation.  For us, this means standing shoulder
to shoulder with the other services in direct defense of our country,
as well as bringing our many valued missions to bear on national
security issues.
3. Coast Guardsmen, Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines, be proud
of your service in the Armed Forces and the uniform you wear.  Your
tireless work ensures our nation remains strong, safe and free.
Thank you for all that you do and your families for their sacrifices
to support you in these endeavors.  Semper Paratus.
