R 282027Z MAR 12 ALCOAST 150/12 COMDTNOTE 1650 SUBJ: SOLICITATION FOR 2012 GREAT MINDS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH (STEM) MILITARY RECOGNITION AWARDS 1. This ALCOAST solicits nominations for the Great Minds in STEM military recognition awards. The mission of Great Minds in STEM is to educate, motivate and enable more underserved students to achieve careers in STEM, to develop and leverage Hispanic STEM talent to play a leadership role, to engage families, educators and employers to support underserved students and communities in STEM careers, to inspire our nation through recognition of the achievements of Hispanics and other role models in STEM, and to lead collaboration and cooperation within the STEM community. This year the Coast Guard and other military services will participate in the annual national career conference and award show to recognize outstanding members of the services for their contributions in these areas. The award recipients will be recognized during the Great Minds in STEM conference Salute to our STEM Military and Civilian Heroes at the Coronado Springs Resort, Orlando, Florida, on Thursday, 11 October 2012. In addition, a Coast Guard Academy cadet and College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative trainee will be recognized at the Future STEM Leaders luncheon, also on Thursday, 11 October 2012. 2. Background. These awards recognize individuals who have distinguished themselves in STEM and community service areas and who best epitomize our core values and the Coast Guard Ethos. 3. Award Criteria. Specific award categories and criteria can be found at the Great Minds in STEM website http://www.greatmindsinstem.org/henaac/nominations/categories.php. Civilian, Reserve and Active Duty members of the Coast Guard are eligible for these awards. The nomination must describe how nominees have distinguished themselves through exemplary and significant contributions to our service and the nation and fulfill the criteria for the specific award to which nominated. 4. All nomination packages, along with a written endorsement from the members Commanding Officer or first O-6/GS-15 in the chain of command, shall be submitted to COMDT (CG-12B) who will coordinate final submission to Great Minds in STEM.
