The Chief Journalist (JOC) Alex Haley Award recognizes the achievement of individuals whose efforts and published works have helped raise the visibility of the Coast Guard. The CDR Jim Simpson Award recognizes a units excellence in its entire public affairs program. 2. A selection panel convened 19FEB13-22FEB13 to review 34 submissions for the CDR Jim Simpson Award and 14 submissions for the JOC Alex Haley Award. I am pleased to announce the results. 3. The following members are the recipients of the 2012 JOC Alex Haley Award for Coast Guard Public Affairs Specialist of the Year (Category A). A. First Place. PA1 Adam Eggers (PADET LA/LB) for expertly managing interagency crisis communication efforts for high profile cases and promulgating superior Coast Guard information campaigns in the greater Los Angeles and Southern California AOR. B. Second Place. PA2 Eric Chandler (D13) for sustaining superb external engagement in support of frontline operations. 4. The following members are the recipients of the 2012 JOC Alex Haley Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Coast Guard Public Affairs (Category B). A. First Place. LT Jeff Janaro (SECTOR LONG ISLAND SOUND) for consistent dedication to increasing public awareness of the Coast Guard in the Long Island Sound (NY) AOR. B. Second Place. LT James Ellsworth (CGC RICHARD ETHERIDGE) for developing a comprehensive public affairs program for CGC RICHARD ETHERIDGE. 5. The following units are the recipients of the 2012 CDR Jim Simpson Award for Coast Guard Public Affairs Office of the Year (Category C). A. First Place. TRACEN CAPE MAY for executing a progressive, multifaceted approach to conducting its public affairs program, which increased understanding of TRACENs missions to internal and external audiences. B. Second Place. DISTRICT SEVENTEEN for raising the visibility of the Coast Guard by supporting multiple contingency operations, conducting high-profile information campaigns, and supporting multiple entertainment media productions. 6. The following units are the recipients of the 2012 CDR Jim Simpson Award for Outstanding Unit Achievement in Coast Guard Public Affairs (Category D). A. Large Afloat. CGC SPAR for an outstanding public affairs program that advanced community relations and media exposure for multiple operations. B. Medium Afloat. CGC MOHAWK for conducting national level media engagement that increased awareness of the Coast Guards role as a leader in the nations continued war on drugs. C. Air Station. AIR STATION ATLANTIC CITY for its public affairs efforts during the Hurricane Sandy response and year-round support of various community relations programs. D. Sector. SECTOR SAN DIEGO for managing a superior, proactive public affairs program for the San Diego and Southern California AOR. E. Ashore. STATION WASHINGTON for supporting major community relations and governmental relations efforts in the Washington (DC) AOR. 7.
