Short Range Communications Upgrade System FAQs

1. What does SRCUS stand for?

Short-Range Communications Upgrade System.

2. Who is responsible for the SRCUS project?

CG-64 is working in conjunction with CG-62 to fund and manage the project. TISCOM is installing the systems and servicing as the CG-6 roles of System’s Development Agent and Systems Support Agent.

3. What radios are being installed as part of the SRCUS package?

The Motorola XTL-5000 O5 VHF and UHF radios will replace current Motorola Astro Spectras in the field. The Standard Horizon GX5500S will be installed on all small boats as the Coast Guard’s standard VHF/DSC radio.

4. Is SRCUS interoperable with Rescue 21?

Yes. The Motorola XTL-5000’s are fully interoperable with the Rescue 21 fixed sites. In time these mobile radios will receive encryptions keys via Over-the-Air Rekeying from the Rescue 21 fixed sites.

5. How does the Boat Crew Communication System (BCCS) on the 47’ MLB relate to SRCUS?

BCCS and SRCUS are actually two separate projects. However, in order to provide the fleet with the most cost effective and professional installation BCCS is being installed in conjunction with the SRCUS project.

6. Does the Standard Horizon GX5500S interface with the Scalable Integrated Navigation System (SINS)?

Yes and no. The GX5500S is being connected via a NEMA connection to the Furuno Navnet x2 displays, to provide visuals for DSC alarms on the plotting system. However, the Furuno Navnet x1 displays are incapable of this interface; as C2CEN upgrades Navnet x1 displays with Navnet x2 displays those connections will be made.

7. Where do I go for new cables for the Motorola XTL-5000?

TISCOM provides cables to units as needed. Their website is http://cgweb.tiscom.uscg.mil/tsd1/tsd1a/VHFsupport.asp and their toll-free telephone number is 800-847-2479 (option 2).
