The Automatic Identification System (AIS) technology and communication protocol has been adopted by the International Maritime Organization as an international standard for ship-to-ship, ship-to-shore and shore-to ship communication of navigation information. AIS allows maritime authorities to closely track and monitor vessel movements within U.S. coastal waters and ports. This ability greatly enhances both maritime domain awareness and port safety
A leader in implementing AIS, the RDC has:
- developed international and national AIS standards
- conducted research, development, testing, and evaluation to improve the range and reliability of AIS
- integrated AIS functionality into other marine communications and navigation systems
- supported the implementation of the Nationwide AIS network.
