As part of the ongoing deployment of Rescue 21 capabilities in Alaska, the U.S. Coast Guard awarded a contract Aug. 9, 2013, to Tetra Tech Tesoro Inc. worth $7.9 million for construction of three new Remote Fixed Facilities (RFF) communication sites and a microwave reflector.

The three new RFF communication sites will provide critical search and rescue communications capabilities in priority areas currently without USCG communications coverage. The new sites are Middle Cape providing coverage for southwestern Kodiak Island, Deception Hills providing coverage of the Fairweather Banks area south of Yakutat, and Duffield providing coverage for the Peril Strait area north of Sitka.

Under the contract, Tetra Tech Tesoro will be responsible for engineering, construction and installation of new communication site facilities including towers, electronic shelters, power generators and shelters, helicopter pads, and propane tanks for powering these remote locations. Completion of the three new communications sites is required by Aug. 30, 2014. Upon completion of the infrastructure construction the Coast Guard plans to install electronics necessary to initiate operations.
